Logan City Council wins AILA Award for Cusack Lane Streetscape project

Logan City Council has proudly been recognised at the 2025 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Queensland Awards, receiving a prestigious award for excellence in civic landscape design. The accolade celebrates the transformation of Cusack Lane in Jimboomba — a project that has significantly improved local amenity, accessibility and public use.

A civic space reimagined

Delivered in partnership with design consultants from AECOM Australia, the Cusack Lane Streetscape Upgrade received the Landscape Architecture Award in the Civic Landscape category. The project reimagined a previously car-dominated street into a dynamic, flexible and pedestrian-friendly space.

Key upgrades included the removal of on-street parking and under-grounding of powerlines — making way for a shaded, accessible public realm that now supports local business, encourages community gatherings and enables a vibrant night-time economy.

AILA judges commended the project as “a compelling example of civic generosity, where space once dominated by cars has been gifted back to the community.” They highlighted the project’s strong community engagement, thoughtful design and role in driving “renewal, equity and identity in regional main streets.”

A collaborative effort

This project was delivered by the Council’s Economic Development and City Planning (EDCP) Branch, with Johnny Pong serving as project manager. His leadership in engaging with the community and maintaining clear communication throughout the build was instrumental to its success. Construction was undertaken by TLCC, who expertly navigated the challenges of building in a constrained space while ensuring local businesses remained operational. The work completed on this project by TLCC included earthworks and the removal of existing pavement, kerbing and softscapes to make way for new infrastructure. Our team constructed in-situ concrete walls that now serve as both retaining structures and integrated seating features, along with new pedestrian pathways and asphalt road crossings to improve accessibility. A new drainage system and upgraded lighting and electrical connections were also delivered to ensure long-term functionality, with an establishment and maintenance period in place to support the successful integration of all new elements.

The Parks Branch, led by Monty Dean, provided essential support to ensure project outcomes aligned with the original design intent.

Delivering on community priorities

The Cusack Lane upgrade delivers on a key outcome identified in the Jimboomba Summit, reflecting Logan City Council’s commitment to place-based renewal and people-first planning.

This recognition from AILA not only honours the quality of the design but also acknowledges the dedication, collaboration and shared vision across Council teams and project partners — and the lasting value it creates for the Jimboomba community. TLCC was delighted to be part of this meaningful transformation and proud to contribute to a project that enhances connectivity, safety and community pride in the heart of Logan Central.
